1. First, check the dirt cup to see if it’s empty. An overfull dirt cup can affect suction.
2. If your dirt cup has screens on the left and right, check to make sure they are clean and not clogged.
The screens can be removed and rinsed off. Make sure screens are completely dry before re-installing into the dirt cup.
3. Check the upper tank, pre and post motor filters for debris. Dirty filters can restrict airflow. Check the upper tank and the pre and post motor filters for debris. The pre-motor filter is found in a drawer right below the dirt container. The post-motor filter is on the back of the vacuum below the hose. The filters may be hand washed in cold water with mild detergent. Reinstall filters when they are completely dry (the white Multi-Layer Post Motor filter on the back of the vacuum is not washable). Failure to properly maintain the filters could result in damage to the motor. Please note: The Lift-Off® Multi Cyclonic series do not have upper tank filters. Check the upper cyclone for debris. The cap is removable for cleaning.
4. Check for good, strong suction at the end of the upholstery hose. If there is not good suction, go on to step 5. If there is good suction, try the steps below.
a) Make sure the hose is firmly connected to the lower hose on back of the vacuum.
b) Check if the brush is turning. Please note: The brush will not rotate when the unit is locked in the upright position because an internal switch turns the brush motor off. If the brush isn’t turning, make sure both the power switch and the brush switch are turned on and that the Lift-Off® canister is seated properly on the base.
c) Remove the black plastic access plate over the brush and check the brush and belt for damage. If the brush won’t turn by hand, you’ll need to replace it, which you can do by clicking here: http://www.bissell.com/parts/?sc=part&productid=2437&partid=4957&cid=ccsocial

d) Check if the lower hose is clogged. The lower hose can be seen after removing the Lift-Off® Canister. It’s to the right of the detent pedal. Recline the unit and look through the hose for obstructions. Push a broomstick through lower hose to unclog. The access plate (black plastic frame over the brush roll) can also be removed to gain better access to the lower hose. Please note: a coat hanger is not recommended for clearing clogs as it may damage the hose
5. If there’s no suction at the end of the hose:
a) Remove the dirt cup and the plastic upper tank filter. Turn the vacuum on and feel for suction in this part of the unit. If there is suction, go on to step b). If there is not suction within the vacuum, go on to step 6.
b) If there is suction, check the hose and the upper and lower tanks for cracks or holes. If there are none, the hose is likely clogged. Detach the hose from the machine by unscrewing counterclockwise. Push a broomstick into the hose to push any obstruction to the end of the hose where it can be removed. Please note: a coat hanger is not recommended for clearing clogs as it may damage the hose.
