Articles and Advice from our Pet Expert

Tech Tools to Manage Your Pet Home in 2016

One of the best things about having pets is that they force us to unplug from technology and reconnect with the “real world.” After all, it’s practically impossible to stay glued to the screen when there’s a cat sitting right in front of it!

But what if you could use technology to actually create more time in your day, keep your fur-family safe, and even strengthen the bond you have with Fido or Fluffy?

Well, the good news is, you can! I’ve rounded up some of the latest and greatest tools that are sure to create a buzz with the high-tech pet set.

Interact with Your Pet from Your Office Chair

Tell the truth. How many times have you wished you could call or text your pet while you’re away? Well, I’ve found the next best thing! More and more pet companies like Petzi are introducing ways to remotely interact with your furry friend.

Most of these solutions use WiFi, your smartphone and an app to check in on your pet, talk to him or her, and even dispense a treat for being so good while you’re away.

Dining on Demand

An automatic feeder or fountain ensures your pet always has fresh food and water, even when you’re away. In the past, many feeders simply dispensed food as the pet ate. But these days, programmable pet bowls allow you to control the time, frequency and amount of food for your furry friend.

On the other hand, pets should have access to clean H2O at all times. One of my favorite high-tech solutions is surprisingly low-tech. The Torus Ultimate Water Bowl comes in one or two liter versions, uses no batteries or electricity, but refills automatically as pets drink. The thick walls keep water cool, and replaceable filters keep it fresh.

Dust Bunnies Beware!

As someone who shares my home with two cats and a dog, vacuuming is a never-ending chore. Dust bunnies and pet hair seem to have the ability to multiply faster than I can suck them up. But with the appropriately named BISSELL SmartClean, those dust bunnies don’t stand a chance!

Just schedule this robotic vacuum to come on at your convenience and let it do its job. Opticlean sensors seek out dirt and debris, whether it’s on carpet, tile or hardwood floors. It even returns to its self-charging station all on its own.

Pet Files at Your Fingertips

Confession... I keep every single veterinary record for every single animal in my life…including the donkeys and goats! Why? I worry that if I throw them away, I won’t have the information I need in case of an emergency. As a result, my "pet files" take up over half of one file drawer!

Luckily, there’s VitusVet to the rescue! This free mobile app lets users view their pet’s complete medical records at any time. So if you have to visit an after-hours vet or one in a different town, all you have to do is pull up your phone to share critical health information. It also means no more filing cabinets full of paper records.

Comfort and Security

Have you ever left the house and wondered whether you locked the door or set the thermostat at a comfortable temp for your pet? Remote home monitoring and security systems ensure your four-legged family member is safe and comfy while you're away at work or on vacation.

Using this technology, you can monitor the temperature, lights, door locks, and even review live cameras while you’re away. Several cable providers offer this service along with your other digital needs. Or, you can simply install tools yourself. Some of my favorites include VueZone, (view your pet on cameras installed at home), and Nest (remotely controls temperature and lighting from room to room).
