Countdown to BlogPaws 2011: 8 Great Pet Blogs to Sniff Out Before the Show

201108Within the social world of Facebook and Twitter, as well as within the blogosphere, is a growing community of pet lovers chatting, blogging and connecting with each other as well as with pet related businesses, organizations and charities. So why do they do it – day after day, blog post after blog post, tweet after tweet? Well, pet people don't just blog and tweet. Pet lovers and companies dedicated to their needs educate the greater pet community, and the whole world, on how to raise funds, reach out to pet-related brands and take better care of pets.

A few popular online communities include Dogster, Catster and Petside, which serve up current, topical content from around the pet care world and offer expert points of view. BISSELL also boasts its very own Pet Lovers Community, where pet parents can ‘dish’ about their own pets and seek solutions from knowledgeable experts.

While each blogger has his or her own reason for blogging, pet bloggers are unique in that they write as a means of helping animals. Some help by chronicling their pet's health problems to educate other pet owners and spare other pets the suffering their pet may have experienced. Others write about pet health care in a more general way, focusing on a wide array of health issues within the same blog.

There also are folks who blog to support shelters or rescue groups, telling of the animals available for adoption, the benefits of adopting a shelter pet, or of fostering a pet. Still others focus on training issues, reaching out to dog owners to explain the most humane methods of dog training.

Because pet parents, bloggers and advocates are eager to connect, a few years ago three passionate pet lovers created a special gathering place called BlogPaws is an online resource that enables pet advocates to partner on projects and campaigns, to be educated on social media, and to arrange face-to-face meetings. In 2011, animal lovers from around the world will once again make a “pilgrimage” to Tysons Corner, Va. (near Washington, DC), for the 3rd Annual BlogPaws Pet Blogging and Social Media Conference held August 25-27. BlogPaws is a great place for pet lovers who love to blog, as well as those who are still trying to figure out what blogging is all about.

For those of you looking for new pet blogs to browse, here are eight of my tried-and-true favorites!

My “Great Eight” Pet Blogs:

Probably my favorite blog overall in terms of comprehensive content relating to travel, trends, home, health and so much more. FidoFriendly is nominated for two Pettie awards this year, for best overall blog and for best blog post.
This one gets four paws up due to its stellar lineup of blog contributors. Top veterinarians, like America’s favorite veterinarian, Dr. Marty Becker, post here along with best-selling pet-care authors, like Gina Spadafori, and other notable pet-care experts are all part of the Pet Connection team.
This is my favorite, written-by-a-real-cat blog with a little help from his human staff member (and BlogPaws co-founder) Caroline Golon. Romeo, a Persian cat and star of this cat humor blog, is famous for his wit and his commitment to fundraising. Each month, Romeo selects a different rescue organization to be beneficiary of funds raised through FURPOWER.
By fur my favorite blog for product reviews. Haute or Not Pets product reviewers work their collective tails off, eating, chewing, wearing, or playing with all of the products featured in Haute or Not so that you can benefit from their "first-paw" experience.
I recently discovered and fell in love with this uplifting blog dedicated to helping people rediscover pit bulls as life long friends. Their vision – a world where every pit bull has the right to a good life. is a must see.
Kenn Bell is not only a delightful guy, (one of the few bloggers I've met personally), but he's a talented filmmaker and mad lover of dogs who has woven these two elements of his life into a visual online delight! TheDogFiles is rich in imagery, video and up to the minute news about pets across the U.S.
If you're looking for a great, all-things-pet blog, is your spot on the net. In addition to news and views on everything from dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, birds and wildlife, PetsWeekly digs up weekly giveaways, coupons and other ways to save on your own furry pack. Or, as this blog's pack leader, Stacy Mantle puts it, "so that you can continue to support your pack in the manner they have become accustomed to!"
Okay, admittedly, I just love the look of this blog – it's beautiful, clean and easy to read and navigate. It features daily products, and recently added daily deals too. Basically, you get the inside scoop on the latest, greatest anything and everything for pets.
